Our sablefish portions are boneless and weighing 6-8 oz each. Often compared to Chilean Seabass, this deep-water species is prized for its rich, buttery texture and exceptionally high Omega-3 content. Harvested in Southeast Alaska, our black cod comes from small-boat fishermen who use sustainable pot gear, ensuring the fishery remains healthy and is certified sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council.
Why Size and Harvest Method Matter
Black cod is graded by size, and sub-4 pound fish are often much cheaper due to their thin, leaner and less desirable fillets. Many of these smaller fish are caught as bycatch in trawl fisheries, where they suffer damage from being dragged in nets. Since trawlers do not target black cod, the fish are not bled, or handled with care, resulting in lower-quality fillets.
In contrast, the pot-caught black cod we sell is carefully handled, bled, and processed immediately onboard, producing a far superior product. Fish from the F/V Dangerous Cape and other Seafood Producers Cooperative boats simply cannot be compared to trawl-caught black cod.
